Recently I came across some articles on color-blindness and felt the need to spread the message in a way a layman can understand.

The matter below is completely adapted from various sources (of course, it has to be, I'm no doctor or researcher). What I tried to do is to bring in all possible points in an easy-to-understand, simple fashion and inculcate the best of all the links I got to into this little web-page of my own.

So let's go to the topic.

WHAT'S COLOR BLINDNESS?

Color blindness is not blindness, but is a deficiency, a lack of perceptual sensitivity to certain colors. If you have difficulty in distinguishing certain colors, you might be suffering anomalous trichromaticity. It is very rare to be completely color blind or a monochromat (sometimes called achromatopsia). There are three types of color receptors in our eyes, red, green and blue. We also have black and white receptors. They are more sensitive than the color receptors, that is why we have poor color perception in the dark.

Color blindness comes as a result of a lack of one or more of the types of color receptors. Most color perception defects are for red or green or both. About 10% of males have a color perception defect, but this is rare in females.

Red-green color blindness is a result of a lack of red receptors. Another form of color blindness - yellow-blue is the second most common form, but it's extremely rare. It is also possible to have the color receptors missing entirely, which would result in black and white vision.

A person with normal vision would see 25,6,45,8,56 & 29 (in that order) in the circles above and a person with Red-Green color blindness (the most predominant color blindness category) would be able to spot the 25 & 56, the others are just full of spots.

The test conducted above is the famous Ishiara Test.

People with normal color vision would see a "5" in the spots, while a Red-Green Color blind person will spot a "2".

If you did see a boat there, then, boy, you are pretty sure in the safe zone.

A normal person would see 16, 2, 5 and 15. A color-blind person would have a problem in distinguishing the first 3 squares, and can interpret the last one as 13 or 17.


5% to 8% (depending on the study you quote) of the men and 0.5% of the women of the world are born colorblind. That's as high as one out of twelve men and one out of two hundred women. Out of them, protans (red weak) and deutans (green weak) make up 99% of this group.


WHY?

Nearly all color deficiency of significant degree is hereditary, congenital (you're born with it), and permanent.

The commonest forms of congenital defective color vision, the red-green deficiencies, are due to "sex-linked X chromosomes" and "simple recessive hereditary traits". Men are mainly affected because women have two X chromosomes and men have only one X and a Y chromosome. If a man's one X chromosome is color defective he will be color deficient, where as , a woman must inherit two color defective X chromosomes to be color deficient. For a woman to be color deficient, her father must be colorblind and her mother colorblind or be a carrier.

A color-defective male always inherits his deficiency from his mother, who usually has normal color vision and is therefore a carrier of the defect. She may have received her color-deficiency gene from either her father (but only if he was color defective), or from her mother (who could have been a carrier herself, or rarely, who was color-defective)


PROBLEMS FACED:

Some common perceptions of color-blindedness is that a color-blind person can't see any color and he sees only in monochrome(black & white). This is absolutely foolish, unless the said-person has acute monochrome colorblindedness, which is again RARE. Also colour blindness is not the swapping of colours in the observer's eyes. Grass is never red, Stop signs are never green.

For some color-deficient individuals, the names red, orange, yellow, and green are simply different names for the same color. The same is true for violet, lavender, purple, and blue.

Among the colors most often confused are pink/gray, orange/red, white/green, green/brown, blue green/gray, green/yellow, brown/maroon, and beige/green. Pastels and muted tones are difficult to distinguish.

The color vision defect can sometimes be so bad that the affected person cannot distinguish brown socks from green socks, a red traffic light from an amber one, or green grass from brown soil by color alone.

REMEDY!!!


There is no treatment or cure for heriditory color blindness. Those with mild color deficiencies learn to associate colors with certain objects and are usually able to identify color as everyone else. However, they are unable to appreciate color in the same way as those with normal color vision.

For some color blind people, special contacts can help with color vision. Unfortunately, there is not a treatment to completely cure color blindness.

But acquired color blindness can be prevented if all possible causes of the disorder can be avoided. The disorder may gradually become more or less severe over time.

If color perception is difficult, there are some strategies that can help:
  • Red tint on a single contact lens can help some people - this can be a soft or gas permeable lens. The process is called a "X" chrome contact lens. Since the lens is worn on one eye only, the perception of color is perceived at different speeds between the eyes. This helps the brain to perceive differences.
  • Get help to match socks. Safety clip them together during washing to prevent matching problems.
  • Shop with a friend when buying clothes, paint, carpets and wallpaper.
  • Remember that red is always at the top on red/yellow/green traffic lights.
  • Artificial light will often distort colors - use natural light when possible.

the son of a friend has just lost hsi firsy job for not passing his colour test. He has a slight problem with red and brown - what is this called? can you tell me any more so I can pass on please.

I have know many men to see a reddish or mauve color under street light and florecent light as a blue color and swear that the color of the object , especially a car is BLUE . Is this possible ? What type of color blindess is this? I know at night I can spot several redish color cars or the mauve color and I am told most definately even under street light that the car is BLUE
